On the northern caribbean coast is the village of Tortuguero (not to be confused with Tortuga which was a pirate refuge/hangout in the 17th century). It is called the "Land of Turtles" for a reason. The beaches surrounding it are a major nesting site for turtles, including some endangered breeds too. Due to this Tortuguero has a national park to help preserve the turtles habitat.
